Breaking Ground with the Camp Kerry Bereavement Care Model

In the spring of this year Camp Kerry founder, Dr. Heather Mohan (PhD, RCC) and Shelley Hermer (MSW, RSW) family therapist and member of the Camp Kerry team, submitted an abstract for the 19th International Palliative Care Congress in Montreal. Their abstract submission was successful and on October 11th, Heather traveled from Vancouver, BC and Shelley traveled from Peterborough, Ontario to offer a presentation called “Breaking Ground with the Camp Kerry Model: Uniting Theory and Practice in Family Centered-Bereavement Care” to an international audience.

Heather and Shelley spoke of the benefits associated with the unique programs that the Camp Kerry Society offers to bereaved families. They emphasized the difference between the Camp Kerry Model of Care and traditional bereavement counselling approaches. The presentation was very well received.

While in Montreal, Dr. Heather Mohan also attended meetings for the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association where she has contributed her time as a member of the Board of Directors since 2010. Much to her surprise, she was one of the recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, an award given through the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association on behalf of the Governor General of Canada to recognize outstanding community service and in Heather’s case, an ongoing commitment and dedication to the advancement of hospice palliative care in Canada.
