About

The Love, Cora Program

Created in loving memory of six-year old Cora Fay Cheney; this initiative spreads kindness in honour of Cora, and supplies care packages intended to offer comfort, hope and practical support to grieving families who have lost a young child.

Cora’s Story

Cora Fay Cheney was a spunky, passionate, fun-loving little girl with bright blue eyes. She adored American Girl dolls, getting her nails done, twirling around her living room to the Trolls soundtrack and playing with her big brother. Everywhere she went, Cora touched people’s lives with her big heart and her huge personality.

Tragically, in the summer of 2018, when she was just six years old, Cora died in a boating accident.

As time went on, Cora’s family dreamed of doing something in honour of Cora’s beautiful spirit that would make a difference for other bereaved families in similar circumstances as their own. After talking with many people about how they could help and consulting with a number of different charitable organizations, the family created the Love, Cora program and decided to partner with Lumara Grief & Bereavement Care Society to launch and deliver it.

How It Works

To Request a Care Package

If you are a family who has experienced the sudden death of a young child between the ages of 1 and 13 years of age, or if you know of a family in this circumstance who might appreciate receiving a care package, please complete the Love, Cora Online Application Form located below. Once your form has been reviewed, someone will be in touch with you to discuss the next steps. Although this program is primarily directed towards families living in the Lower Mainland of Vancouver, the Society may potentially be able to arrange the delivery of a care package to other regions. Each request will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

All care packages are personally curated by Cora’s family and can be customized upon request. Depending on individual needs, packages will include items and services that Cora’s family found helpful in the first year of their bereavement such as: meal kit delivery vouchers, home cleaning services, a special birthday candle for their child, a journal, a donation to Lumara Grief & Bereavement Care Society (to support counselling programs for grieving children & families) and an American Girl Doll (if there is a sibling who would appreciate this gift). The approximate value of each package is $1000.
